Bill was serving in the Army at Rimini in 1946. The state of San Marino nearby was neutral during the war. The Germans were not allowed in. San Marino was set on a high mountainside. The English soldiers went up to the town to let off steam on days off. They went up in an Army truck. Bill was a mechanic in an Infantry Unit, so he was able to get a permanent work ticket so that he could go and test vehicles. He would take a few friends and they all liked to go up to San Marino - as there was often lots of wine!
When the Germans invaded the area, the local Italians escaped up to San Marino. The Germans couldn鈥檛 touch them there. The Italians built the new road up the mountainside after the war, as a thank you.
Bill went back 50 years later to Rimini on a 鈥淪hearers鈥 coach trip with wife Sylvia, which brought back many memories. He even went back to the same cafe he had spent many a time in as before, which still had the same owner as 50 years ago!
