I remember that night so well as if it was like yesterday. I was just about 7 years old the war had been on for 2 years. I was sent away from home to a safe place away from the bombs that fell on our town Newcastle to a small village just outside of Longtown so this is my story.
Going to bed one night I slept with Joyce a girl about the same age as me. After some time sleep came. I was in the land of dreams that鈥檚 what I thought. Bang I was on the floor crying. Mr Johnson came in and said get under the bed you two another big bang then another. The house shook and things were falling all over the place. It was so bad I thought the house was coming down. I think I cried myself to sleep that night. Next morning I remember getting up as if nothing had happened and going out to play with our friends. Next we went for our morning walk across the road to the lane not far up. We could see two big holes. I have never seen holes like them. I asked what had made the big hole. I was told an aeroplane had dropped bombs the night before. They were after the airfield. Not long after we came across the aeroplane. It had been shot down. Soldiers were everywhere with notices telling everyone to keep out so now I know what made me fall out of bed.
