During the war my cousin Ethel Thwaites adopted a minesweeper ship. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the ship. Periodically we sent parcels to the seamen on board. The men said they suffered damage to their hands from pulling the wire ropes involved in their jobs. My mother, Molly Johnston of Millfield Sunderland, successfully designed mittens for the men to wear.
The mittens were made of thick felt joined together with blanket stitch, my mother then crocheted a cover mitten of double string to cover the felt. Obviously her hands suffered from roughness of the materials involved.
Apparently, according to the seamen the mittens were a great success.
