This story has been added to the People’s War website by Jenny Burnett on behalf of Winifred Noakes. Winifred has given her permission and understands the sites terms and conditions.

I was living in Talbot Road (in Portsmouth). There was a terrible air raid. The boy scouts used to meet in the church hall of Holy Spirit Church. They were at a meeting that night and got a direct hit. They were all killed. A sailor who was home on leave was helping out there — he was killed too.

We couldn’t stay in the houses because of the damage, so I moved into rooms in Waterlooville. My husband Fred was stationed in Arbroth and he sent for me so that’s where I had my daughter.

Fred lost many relations in a shelter at the bottom of Lake Road which had a direct hit.
