Prior to D-Day most of the 51st Highland Division were camped in and around Much Hadham.
The two bands stationed locally would practice up and down the village street, led by a pipe major who had a large bushy beard. We later learned that he was killed piping the division ashore on D-Day.
On D-Day itself my friend Hugh Rogers were standing on a bridge over the river Ash at Hadham Ford, Much Hadham, watching aircraft of all types towing gliders. The sky seemed completely full of these aircraft and the scene seemed to continue for hours.
