Life in Exeter: Working for the District Valuers Office

I worked for the District Valuers Office during the war; this was an office-based, typing and administration job. As a reserved occupation, we were lucky enough to be based in a fine country house, just outside Exeter. I worked here until I was married.
My story happens during a raid while I was at work. We hid either under a very big wooden kitchen table (!) or if there was time, down in the wine cellar. After a particularly heavy bombing, I clearly recall walking through the streets of Exeter, and afterwards my clothes reeking of the smell of smoke - the after effects of the incendiary bombs
