I was born in Malta and lived at Marsa. I was only six and a half years old at the time of the war. I remember the war very well. We virtually lived in the shelters, with air raids one after another. The sky at night lit up,like an inferno, search lights on, "booming" sounds going on . A torpedo dropped on our house as we were going into the shelter, the blast of the bomb blew us down the shelter. My father never went down the shelter, he used to say "If i have to die, i want to die out here".During air raids he used to tell us what went on, what aeroplanes went down or which area had been hit most. My dad was lucky he was never hit by any shrapnel. We had gas masks in case of need, but i don't remember using them.
Rations were on, we were very short of food. We were waiting for a convoy coming in with food but as it entered the harbour it was blown up. that was very bad, a few days later another came in and thank God, everybody praised God, that everything went well. malta was bombed as much as London. After the war, when i was old enough, i went to work. i worked at the N.A.A.F.I and i married an air man. We were married for nearly 40 years, but with great sadness i lost my husband ten and a half years ago.
