I always enjoyed listening to Ella Fitzgerald sing, so when she was in a film in our local cinema I made a point of going to see it.
She was singing the song "Stormy Weather" during which we heard a doodlebug (a horrible noise) which cut out its engine directly overhead. When it stopped everyone stood up as they were expecting an explosion. The person next to me grabbed me and i grabbed him, then just waited. When the explosion came the bomb was definately only a little way away. My neighbour and I chatted for quite a while. Then we went to the pub for a while. He called up an army chap (he was in the local army barracks) and he took me to Shenfield which was the next village along. We agreed to meet the next night and after that we met several times and it ended up in us getting married.
Our marriage lasted 50 years, all but 3 months.
