I was 11 when War was declared. When evacuees came to Astley Abbotts our school population went from 50 to 150. The evacuees had the desks and the locals had to sit on the library boxes - 6 to a box.
In the beginning the locals went to school in the morning and the evacuees in the afternoon. Over time many of the evacuees went back home and the remaining evacuees merged with the locals.
Whist drives were arranged to raise money for comforts for the Forces. Many hours were spent knitting balaclavas, fingerless gloves and scarves for the troops.
We were very lucky that we didn't see many enemy aircraft, there was a frightening incident when a workman and his horse were attacked, it was assumed that the enemy were trying to locate the Power Station at Ironbridge.
