My main view of the occupation, bearing in mind that it arrived at a very formative time in my life, between 9 and 14, bordering on 15, was the privation more than the occupation, that鈥檚 what comes through. Lack of everything - no shoes, and we had a lot of walking to do. No shoes, shoes made of paper, compressed paper. But basic things we take for granted today. We had no electricity in our house so we had to find candles. We don鈥檛 make candles in Guernsey, not then at least, so we had to mark candles - just enough to get to bed. We used to find our way round the house, and if we had to get up during the night it was in the dark.
