I was a child during the war. I can remember the gas masks being issued but I never used mine. A man brought them one Saturday, and I thought they were going to harm us.
I can remember the shortages of food. I also remember the Army came to take the iron railings from around Queens Park but the park keeper wouldn’t let them take them because it would endanger the children. It took all day to get it sorted out with help from the Police and the Council. The park keeper won, but the Army came back when he wasn’t there and took them. He refused to re-open the park until some railings were put back for safety.
I can remember being in Chesterfield at the Town Hall on VE night. There was an enormous ‘V’ sign on the Town Hall but it fell over! There were big crowds.
