Bombings At Rushden Northamptonshire.
1. Shirley Road hit and ignited main gas main.
2. Hit 鈥渢urret type鈥 roof at S.W. corner of Victoria Hotel.
3. Middle of road where Belisha crowing now situated.
4. Stonehurst, bomb passed through the building and exploded in the cellar.
5. Fell in Caves sports field, now a private car park.
6. Hit Caves factory. 4 men lost their lives, many injured.
7. Hit Alfred Street School. 7 children lost their lives, many injuries.
8. Hit air raid shelter situated in the school playground, luckily the air raid warning had not sounded and the shelter was empty.
9. Hit dwelling house in John Street.
10. Hit the shop of Mr G.E. Morgan which was situated next shop but one to the Lightstrung Garage, made a hole at the foot of the stairs but did not explode.
11. Fell on open ground at the rear of the Scout Room.
6 incendiary bombs fell, maybe more.
ROBERTS STREET BOMB.
鈥淎鈥 fell 19.11.40 about 22.30 horus. Killed 4 adults and 1 child.
Fell in gardens between Roberts Street and Newton Road. Demolished rows of terraced houses in both streets. Space in Roberts Stree now occupied by Police houses.
Blast from bomb jammed doors of the Fire Station so that they could not be opened, also broke shop windows in the High Street.
YORK ROAD 鈥淏OMB鈥.
Believed to have fallen August 1942.
Cannister of flares (used to illuminate a target) pierced roof of bottom house on left in York Road. Ignited house and fractured gas pipe. Escaping gas killed two people. Occupants named Abbott.
HARBOROUGH RAOD BOMB 1942.
Bomb fell in field at rear of houses in Harborough Road making a huge crater.
