This is a story of three school children who had the fright of their lives in the 1940's. We had cycled to the village of Carlton during school holidays to see if we could 'scrump' any vegetables from village fields.
We had got a few potatoes and were sitting by the side of the road before we cycled back to Bedford.
Suddenly three American lorries came down the road carrying troops and one of my friends threw a potato under the leading lorry.
Immediately an officer shouted 'Halt!' followed by an order and all the troops got out of the vehicles and took up firing positions round their transport.
We watched in shock and amazement when suddenly another order got them back in their lorries and moved on. Another few words were shouted out by the officer and a cascade of chewing gum, lifesavers and other sweets were thrown towards us.
Three speechless schoolboys suddenly came to life and gathered up the 'spoils' and filled our pockets. We were pretty popular back home with our mates as sweets were about non-existent then.
The potatoes? Left at the side of the road as we cycled back to Bedford.
