I would have done anything to miss school when i was six in 1940. I hated having to cross the Reading to Bath Road on the way because often there were endless convoys travelling west. One day when i was late for school i made a dash for it and was severley told off by one of the American soldiers in asn enormous vehicle. I liked the American soldier who was billeted on us fron Greenhamj Common base because he gave me sweets and chocolate powder to eat on the end of a pencilbut this one was scary. I certainly perferred American sodiers to the noisey London evacuees we had once.
Sometimes when it was foggy my father walked me the 2 miles to Battle Infants School, pushing his Raleigh bike, before he went on to his teaching job. He let me collect the little strips of silver, used to interfer with aircraft, landing in the gutter, although i was always warned not to pick up anything from the pavement in case it was dangerous.
