As a young school boy at the local village primary school, an important task to be performed before playing games on the school field was the removal of shrapnel.
For those who are younger than me, shrapnel consists of sharp irregular lumps of metal from exploding anti aircraft shells shot at German bombers and fighters as they raided the docks and factories in Hull.
To find this shrapnel, we would line up across the playing field on our hands and knees and proceed along the field picking it up for subsequent removal and re-use in the war effort.
If you missed any, your knees would be cut to ribbons - I still have the scars to prove it, even after all these years!!!!
