Three 56 Squadron pilots in their flying gear, 1940-41

I have identified the pilot in the middle - it is F/O B Wicks. I believe he was shot down over Malta and I believe he was decorated during his short time as a fighter pilot.

Message 1 - A Trio of Pilots

Posted on: 27 August 2004 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Nick

The pilot in the middle is almost certainly that of F/O Brian John Wicks of 56 Squadron. He forced-landed in Hurricane I N2431 on the Belgian border on 22nd May 1940. He evaded capture and returned to England via Dunkirk on 3rd of June. He was killed on 12 October 1942, then a Squadron Leader with 126 Squadron. Details here About links

A photo of him, cropped from a copy of yours, appears at page 28 of Volume 1 of "Royal Air Force Fighter Command Losses" by Norman L. R. Franks.

Regards,

Peter
