GORDON HARRIS

When the War broke out I was called up for Army, but a large farmer, called me for a tractor driver. He was a big name on the Agricultural War Committee. He had a large farm and wanted a tractor driver.

He had 3 hundred acres on the Mendip Hills. One day I found a hole in a field, this was an unexploded bomb. I had ploughed across it, not knowing it was a bomb. 2 days later two officers came in field to warn me and stop me working. The farm was snowed in for a week, we had to walk to Cheddar to fetch bread, meat, etc. 5 miles, during this weather we had 150 ewes to lamb, we had Swedes to cut and feed, we had a house cow for milk, plenty of wild rabbits for cooking for meat.

Returning from dance after lighting up time my motor cycle had no lights and two policemen tried to stop me. I slowed up then drove past and turned off at the first corner and lost them and they lost me.
