It was during the May Blitz 1940/41. Dad was on munitions carrying and mum and I were left at home,I was five years of age,the usual ragamuffin type, but well spoken with it!!!
Well, one evening when Adolf,in his wisdom sent some of their planes to do yetmore damage to the Liverpool Docks.
At the bottom of our road we had Tram Sheds which had been converted to airraid shelter duties.
The Air Raid siren had gone off and mum, panicking a little grabbed my hand and rushed me out of our front door and literally hurtled me down the road.
The street lamps (gas may I add) were off and with a resounding smack I was dragged into a solid iron street lamp trunk.
This is how I recieved my first black eye and what a shiner it turned out to be!!!
You can rest assured that the street lamp incident was embelished into a stranded German Aircraft Pilot whom I ran after, brought him down with a flying Roy of the Rovers tackle and n the struggle I recieved a black eye!!
I often wonder how many of my mates believed me at the time!!!
