Mr George Anderson Layton was born on 21st July 1921 and married to Doris Goodrum at Crosshill, Codnor on 17th March 1945.They had 4 children:- Brian,David,Christine,Jackie and nine grandchildren. This is his story.
He joined the army Royal Armour Ordinance Corps(R.A.O.C.) on the 22 August 1944. He was a sergeant and his number was 10586271. Then he downgraded to a corporal so he could join the Commandos. He was in 3 Troop no.6 Commandos.
He landed on D-Day at Sword Beach (Pegasus Bridge and Bridge of Remigen) 9.30 a.m. on 6th June 1944. He lay in a ditch for a while then set off to march to a village where he was badly wounded. His comrade was killed at the side of him. The French resistance found him, fed and watered him, cared for him but dare not get expert medical advice or help for fear of reprisals.
He was rescued a few days later and taken to hospital. He took a long time to recover and was discharged having been found medically unfit for further service. (He was in Ward 54 of EMS Hospital, Whitingham, Preston, Lancashire)
