I was abroad for 4 years in the Royal Tank Regiment and the first battle was the Battle of the Alamein in Egypt.

My job in the Army was a tank driver - it was a Churchill tank with a flame thrower attached. The flame thrower was made up 75% petrol and the remainder was liquid rubber and the heat of it would burn people alive.

If you were taken prisoner by the Germans, you were shot, and likewise.

I was one of the few that came out of the war without a scratch

From Egypt we were sent to Italy and landed at Naples and from there travelled up the East Coast into Austria, a place called Grasz, where the war finished.
