We were in a troopship at Princes Dock, Glasgow, in late October 1942. We didn't know where we were going but suspected it would be a long way. We set sail on Friday afternoon. The Clyde is not very wide and on the opposite bank a girl came out of a factory, waved, and called to other workers; they all came out and waved too. Nearby there was an aircraft carrier being constructed; the men on the craft were all waving too. I've never seen so many tears on the faces of the troops. We finished up in Algiers: we were the 1st Army who moved East to join up with the 8th Army coming West. A year later we were in Italy and one of my comrades said '12 months ago we were on the Clyde' and another replied 'Yes, and wasn't it b****y awful!'
