The Bombing of Burngreave School
Pitsmoor Sheffield
During the Sunday night/Monday morning air raid on 15th December 1940, Burngreave School was bombed. I had attended this school for just three months, having moved there from Ellesmere Road School when I was 11 years old.
My Teacher was Miss Poxen and our classroom was next door to the headmistress鈥檚 study.
The bomb hit the Earldom Road corner of the school, destroying these rooms and also the science laboratory, cloakrooms and stairs. I can remember going to see the damage and of course Miss Yeats, the headmistress, was there. It was joked that she was looking for her 鈥淪trap鈥 that she sometimes had to use on pupils.
We understand now what a tragedy it must have been for her.
We were soon back at school using the remaining classrooms.
This school is now named 鈥淏yron Wood School鈥
