This story was submitted by an anonymous author, on behalf of Age Concern Durham County.

I remember my mum telling me a story about her cousin Jack, who was serving in the forces and had to escape from Dunkirk beaches. He was an excellent swimmer and very tall. On the beach he found a young boy, only 18, who couldn't swim. Jack placed him on his back and swam about a mile into the English channel until a boat picked them up. He was from Birtley and a great credit to his regiment.
