My grandmother, Jeanette Barton had a caravan in Aberyswyth during the war. The caravan was situated near a railway station and when soldiers were brought back from prisoner of war camps at the end of the war, all the trains in the station let off their hooters and sirens to celebrate the safe return of the soldiers.
I also remember when the blackouts were over and the lights came back on i was in awe of all of the lights, being a child i'd never seen them before. My dad, Frederick Smale, used to take myself and two brothers, Robert and Raymond, out around Hereford in the evenings so that we could revel in the lights. I thought it was magical.
