The desert campaign was back and forward at that time in Africa. We got word that we had to return to Alexandria when we were out doing manoeuvres near the Dead Sea. We didn鈥檛 know where we were going but we knew we were going back somewhere quickly, because they never even let us go back and get our kit bags out of our tents. They made us get straight on the ship.
We arrived and there was a man standing directing the traffic on the desert tracks and funnily enough it was a Limivady man, a red cap, Willy Wilson, we arrived anyway at a wee railway station but from there on your were in the desert all the time, six seven months until we landed at Tripoli, Tunisia. It was Cyrenica then. It was red hot just like Alexandria; raid, raid, raid.
Eventually the yanks and all landed in North Africa at the other end, and used a pincher movement on the Germans from each side. Eventually they capitulated. From Tripoli I took ill and they took me down to Alexander and I never saw my unit after that. I was posted away to different units.
