Iwas 10 years old when the war ended, we lived in three different houses through out the war years, I was about six or seven when we live in a housing estate called Manor Farm in Brighton and to get to school at Whitehawk I had to walk over a hill and down into the valley of Whitehawk to get to school. One day the air raid siren sounded and we all went to the shelters that were built under the play ground, we were there for a long time and the teachers thought the all clear must have sounded and we hadnt herd it so as it was so late in the day, they let us all go home, walking back home over the hill, Ihad just reached the top when two german aircraft flew over very low, I think they were FW 109 fighters, one had black smoke coming from the engine area and the other one was keeping it company, they were so low I could see the pilots clearly, and they flew out to sea, a few seconds later, two Spitfires thunderd over also flying very low,I could see those pilots too, we herd later the two german planes were shot down over the sea, I often wonder if the german pilots sevived the war and also if the two Spitfire pilots got through the war too.
