I'm the youngest son in a family of eight, my eldist brother and I are the only ones left alive now, he lives in Peasehaven nr Brighton and I live in a small country town in Australian. He was a mid upper gunner flying in Lacasters in the war, I was ten when the war ended, and have many momories of that time still.
We lived in three different houses thought out the war years, one being at a housing estate called Manor Farm, and attended a school at Whithawk which I had to walk to over a hill and down in to a valley to Whithawk school I was about five or six at the time. One day at school the air raid warning sounded and we all went down to the shelters in the play ground and waited for the all clear, we were down in the shelters for ages, and the teachers said they must have forgot to sound the all clear and as it was so late in the day, sent us all home, I had just got to the top of the hill, walking home when two german aircraft came over head flying very low, I think they were fw 109s fighters, one had black smoke pouring from the engine area and the other one was flying with him, they were so low I could see both the pilots clearly, they both flew out to sea very slowly, a few seconds later two Spitfires came thundering past, also flying very low and I could also see the pilots with their helmets on, we heard later on the two german aircraft were shot down over the sea, I often wonder if they servived, and if the two Spifire pilots servived the war also.
