As a schoolboy I grew up at the south side of Sarisbury Green. The green and flattened road verges, and Brooklands Park were a D-Day Transit Camp. A Canadian tank squadron awaited the signal to drive to their landing craft. My dog Pat, a wire haired terrier, had been absent all day from home. He was inclined to accept food from soldiers. As we found out later Pat had been abducted as a mascot. During the evening a police car driver arrived with an excited Pat. The Policeman had stopped the tank squadron because he could see a white terrier being held by a tank commander whose head and shoulders stuck out of the tank turret. The Policeman demanded to see the dog. He spotted a collar tag engraved with my address at the time. From then on Pat was chained to his kennel until troop movements ended.
