I was born in Nottingham in June 1945. Shortly after my birth, my natural father said goodbye to me and I never saw him again. I didn't even know the father I was brought up by, wasn't my natural father, until my mother told me when I was aged 24.

She told me a few facts about him, but not enough for me to ever find him. Now that we live in the age of the internet, it would be easy to think that anything is possible but I haven't found him yet. I know that he would almost certainly be deceased now but he had at least one other daughter before I was born, so somewhere out there I have a half-sister. As an only child, it would be my greatest wish to find her.

I know that my father's name was Joseph Foster and that he came from California. If anyone has any ideas that might assist me in my search, please contact me. I should be forever grateful if I ever found her.

Message 1 - Resubmit to General Home Front Desk

Posted on: 16 July 2003 by Deborah - WW2 Team

Hello there,

I'd like to suggest that you resubmit this contribution to the General Home Front Desk, which is an area on the site that is dedicated to finding people.

You can do this by removing the story from the Editorial Desk, then clicking the 'Submit for review' button, and resubmitting it to the General Home Front Desk.

I would also suggest that you publish your real name on the site - who knows, someone might come here searching for you! You can do this by clicking on the 'My Details' link in the top right hand corner of every page.

Best wishes
Deborah

Message 1 - Genealogy on the internet

Posted on: 31 July 2003 by L Jackson

Hello Researcher 230298

Finding people on the Internet is not always simple. I suggest you get a book from the library, or read some of the full text of "Finding Genealogy on The Internet" at the following web site:
About links

Another good site to try is the encyclopedic "Cyndi's List" at:
About links

I suggest starting with the "How to" section.

If your father had an unusual name I would have suggested using a simple search engine, but there are too many "Joseph Foster"s around I'm afraid.

If you have any more specific questions you can drop a note in my virtual pigeonhole at:

I hope this helps, L Jackson.

Message 2 - clarification

Posted on: 04 August 2003 by L Jackson

Using internet genealogy sites to find living people assumes that they are also looking for your common ancestors. If they are not then this won't work!

Cyndi's list "How to" section also covers hiring researchers in various countries.

HTH, L Jackson.

Message 1 - Base or military unit?

Posted on: 01 August 2003 by L Jackson

Hello again Researcher 230298

If your father could be linked to a specific military base or unit you may be able to find a message board devoted to that unit where you could leave a message. See for example (on this site) my previous research on someone from the Burtonwoods base near Liverpool. Bases (such as Burtonwoods) and units may also have organisations devoted to their past.

HTH, L Jackson
