My name is Christine and the story that follows is as provided to me by my father, Edward Green.

When I was a kid of about 8/9 I had 4 brothers in the Navy, Jack, Mick, Dave, Jimmy. When we kids were playing in the street and the telegram lads came down the street and everyone stopped because it was always bad news for someone. One day my mother got three telegrams Mick missing , Dave missing , Jack dead. A few days later both Mick and Dave were reported alive and well but my mother was informed that Jack was presumed dead on a submarine called HMS Cachalot. About 2 years later on xmas day there was a knock on our door i went to answer it and a big raf sgt stood there and said "Is your mum our dad in". My dad was behind me and the sgt said have you got a son Able Seaman John (Jack) Green p/ssx24927? My Dad said, I had a son by that name but he his dead. He is not, your son is alive and well, a prisoner of war with the Italians. My mother and dad were overjoyed and asked how did he know. I am from the RAF camp at Padgate and your son as been allowed to broadcast a message and has given this address and says he is alive. And well.some months later he was repatriated and was home for a short time, then he went back again on a submarine called SYRTIS. A short time later the submarine was reported missing and all men lost, around 34 men
aound the Norwegian cost while escorting a 3 man submarine which was laying mines. So my mother lost my brother Jack got him back and and lost him again.

Message 1 - Brother Jack

Posted on: 10 May 2005 by Ian

Hello Caroline,

My father was a passenger on Cachalot's last trip from Alexandria to Malta in 1941, and may well have got to know your brother Jack on the seven-day journey. He stayed in Malta with 830 Squadron, and Cachalot was sunk a few days later on her return journey. Some of her crew went to Montalbo POW camp, but I don't know if they were still there in November when my father arrived.

With best wishes
Ian

(PS I have also came across references to Cachalot in the search engine here as Cachelot and Cechalot.)
