We as a family, my three sisters and mother, Dad stayed at home, were evacuated to Bognor Regis, to a village called Felpham.
We stayed with a lady called Mrs Hall who with her daughter lived in a lovely cottage.
Schooling was part of our daily lives, and life was fairly good. We saw in the village the Queen Mary RAF lorries transporting Spitfire wings and their parts to their appropriate air bases.
I was moved to another family in Felpham where hot water was knocked over and scalded my foot.
We returned to Croydon, to our family home, but a direct hit on a house near us forced our parents yet again to move us to Hanley in Stoke on Trent. On arrival in Hanley we all stayed in a huge warehouse where large groups of families were also eating and sleeping. Again schooling took place, I was given a banana, didn't know what it was as fruit was very scarce then. My sisters and I were treated very well in Stoke on Trent, yet again was moved to stay with a very kind lady, who unfortunately contracted T.B. and was taken to hospital. So I was returned to be with my sisters at a house where I met an American G.I. who was later killed in action.
Our family moved back to Croydon in the later part of war, and my elder sister informed me that the doodle bugs were still landing in London.
I was three at the start of the war, and nine when it finished, it's quite amazing what you can remember at a very young age.
