I joined the WAAF on my 20th birthday — August 6th l940. I was sent to Leighton Buzzard for training as a clerk S.D. (Ops) Plotten. We were billeted in the Old Wakehouse.
By the time I was posted to 12 Gray HQ Watnall, the Battle of Britain had started and I was immediately thrown in at the deep end. We worked shifts (over 24 hours) and were very grateful for foggy times. I served almost 5 years at Watnall.
I remember hitch hiking to London on the day before V.J. day with a friend and being given a bed for the night at ATS billets by the police. We stood outside Buckingham Palace for several hours on VJ day waiting for the King, Queen and family to come out on the balcony. We cheered with the rest! A very memorable occasion.
