There were sixteen, about sixteen American units here. The whole lot were known as Camp Bewdley. Why they decided on Camp Bewdley nobody know. But it was called Camp Bewdley. In the run up to D-Day General Patton came to Kidderminster.
He actually came in late May to Kidderminster and inspected his troops, and there are some photographs about, of his troops walking down Vicar Street were the salute was taken outside the Town Hall. Its not generally known, but there is a book about it which is now out of print which, gives it all in absolute detail. They had a military hospital here, at Wolverley; which is now a caravan park but on the old Wolverley Castle site there was an American military hospital. When asked how many Americans, Ron said: 鈥淥h, I鈥檇 hate to hazard a guess鈥

Message 1 - Camp Bewdley Worcestershire

Posted on: 16 June 2005 by billlawrence

I have just accessed the message about the US Army base at Bewdley, alongside the now Severn Valley Railway line heritage site.

This site was known to many locally as the Burlish Camp, after the farms nearby which were operated by Kidderminster Industrial Co-op Society. Most of the base was a medical unit.....ambulance trains used to bring the injured troops to Stourport and Burlish Halt stations. Even though I was only three or four at the time I think my recollection is OK.

There was also a prisoner of war camp on this site near to what is known as the Rifle Range land going over towards what is now the West Midlands Safari Park. This range continued in use by the loacl TA, even with tank exercises well into the 1950's.

I have correspondence sent from the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge from a USA medical officer who had befriended my uncle when stationed at this camp.

I will return to this dicsussion with more details.
