I was 14 when the war broke out. I helped at Barnsley Hall when the Dunkerque soldiers were billeted there for recovery. I helped in R1 ward making the tea etc.
Later on I went and worked in the BSA factory making tank track links. I was always cutting my hands on the sharp edges. The gasses in the factory upset my lungs so I had to leave. I went to Severn Stoke and worked with the land army. I learnt to milk a cow. I helped with calving and lambing. I liked feeding the ones that were rejected. The other girls called me “ Mary Mary “ because I had the little lambs. I had a good time and made lots of friends in the Land Army
