I was born exactly 2 months after the war began so have no memories of the early years. In 1944/45 we had billetted with us soldiers from the US Infantry 29th Division. I can't remember their names but my mother nicknamed one of them "Van" as he looked like Van Johnson the film actor!
Things were on ration and many items we take for granted today were not seen for years then. My mother used to do the servicemens laundry, she would painstakingly wash, dry and iron everything for them, copper boiler, mangle etc etc........ One day she took all the clean clothes upstairs and went to store them in their wardrobes, great whoops of joy!!! When they came in that evening she said, "I couldn't help noticing but you have butter, sugar, peanuts and raisins stored in your wardrobes." "You want some, Honey?" "Go help yourself" The next day they all set to and made a huge pan of peanut and raisin fudge. I can remember it now cooling off in one of those white enamalled wash basins with the blue rim around the top. I kept going to it and testing it just wishing it was cold enough to have some. I got myself an egg cup and dived into the sticky mass..................absolute heaven!! Needless to say everyone was watching me from behind the curtains.
I just wish we had kept in touch with those soldiers.
