This contribution has been added to the People's War site by a volunteer on behalf of Edward Lewis.

I landed on Gold Beach on June 6th 1944 as part of the Second Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.

The guns were our objective. HMS Ajax put two shells in to one of the gun positions and as all the guns were linked, the blast did a lot of damage. The German troops were happy to surrender!

I stayed with my battalion through the entire campaign, ending up in Berlin.
