We were all in bed in the room downstairs. My husband, myself, one girl of 6 and a boy of 3. Topping and tailing and all partially clothed just in case. My husband heard the noise of the doodle bug. We had no shelter, but could use next doors — she kept the door open for us. But we didn’t have time to go, so my husband pushed us all in the cupboard under the stairs where we kept the coal. The handle fell off into the living room so my husband had to kick the door open to get us all out again afterwards!

He stood there in his pants, but with no trousers on — it was comical after, but at the time it was all very frightening. The house was very damaged, a shambles. It was terrible.
