STILL DANCING
Why, oh why should they have to fight?
An announcement, those captured, missing and died.
Yes, I had a good time last night.
Don鈥檛 mention the tears we had to hide.
Working in East Anglia during the war years,
There were many opportunities to dance;
In spite of all our worries and fears,
We enjoyed ourselves given the chance.
Visiting the area again in 1992,
My mind went back to fifty years ago;
This was a case of d茅j脿 vu,
From Land Army days toiling with my hoe.
When I returned home to Hatfield,
At the local community centre after dinner;
Checking notices a celebration dance appealed,
Gee!! this special outing sure is a winner.
An American Connection Weekend in Braintree,
With many ceremonies and events taking place;
Including something I wanted to see,
The all women band and Ivy Benson鈥檚 face.
A welcoming speech for the returning Yanks,
Then dancing with the jitterbug and jive;
An American veteran expressing his thanks.
It made us feel glad to be alive.
Why, oh why should they have to fight?
Now It seemed they were by our side.
Yes, I had a good time last night.
Don鈥檛 mention the tears we had to hide.
