iT WAS A CLEAR BRIGHT NIGHT WHEN i was on duty as guard commander at the barracks.
Iwas just 18 and was promoted due to my radio knowledge and all junior ncos got all the nasty jobs ,one was guard commander
n It was 2hors on and 4 houtds off for the remainder of the guadd.
one got no allowance for being up all night and had to be on 9am parade next day
but that night I hads to sign for a prisoner . he was a FRench Vichy prisoner.
The guardroom at st johns wood was yery small with just enough room to accomodate the guarg .
It hd a smsll coal fire and a cell jus big enough to get one prisoner in.
An airaid was on permently in yhose days so kings regs di not allow me to lock hjs cell door.
Anyway about 6.30 pm two of my guard came to me and said ""can we take the prisoner to the naffi hes a man of honouh corporal and he has the croix de gereu and he wont escape I said ok
but this fellow a whilly bird scaled a 15 foo wall dorig a very heavy burst of ack ack fire froe primrose hill this was always able to stun anyony.
S |I reported prisoner gone to reg police and they picked him up at midnight rtrying to board a boat at southampton docks that same night. he must have moved to get there in 3 hours.
there was some sort af court marshall but i got away with it. they could not afford to loses a radio man in those days.
