Mr Fairnington, Wooler
I was at work as a joiner, and the company I worked for was heavily involved with the war effort. We were concerned with maintenance of the military camps. One day, I was called to the local 'NAAFI' to work on the roof. Whilst on the roof, I saw four hurricane planes flying in line with each other. They were then joined by two further planes, spitfire, from Acklington. As one of the spitfires tried to join in the path of the plane, it hit the back of one of the hurricanes and managed to take off the tail of the plane as well as his own wing. When both pilots tried to open their parachutes, they were too close to the ground for the parachutes to work and both men were killed from the crash.
