I vividly remember as I left Cuxhaven enroute to the UK in 1947 the sea was frozen
The ship veered through the ice and as you looked from the bow a crack zig zagged for a considerable distance ahead of the vessel, looking down at the side of the ship the ice was turning over and appeared to be about a foot thick, there was no noticeable vibration felt, I don't know if the ship was equipped with any special equipment for cutting through the ice, but it was very efficient in dealing with this situation, it was a strange experience at the time, and one that has stayed in my memory over the years.
It was a cruel winter in 1947, but I had no idea the sea with its strong salt content could freeze like this.
