The waterworks was such a lovely building,
Victorian I think, or maybe pre-
Fancy brickwork, round the doors and pointed windows,
And a graceful chimney there for all to see.
But when the war came, so did German aircraft.
They used the chimney as a bombers' guide
To find the way to blast the north-east shipyards,
Of Middlesborough, Newcastle and Tyneside.
That graceful chimney had to be dismantled,
The landmark that all local people knew,
But war is war and everyone must suffer,
It's better to save lives, than save a view.
