Mabel was brought up in North Shields. Wilkinson’s Lemonade factory got a direct hit and everyone working there ate the time got killed. Mabel‘s brother was in the Durham Light Infantry — Tommy Clark. He was shot fighting at Dunkirk, and was sent home. He sadly died 2 years later.

Mabel can remember going in the fun shelter in the garden and the bombs going off in the gardens behind. Mabel’s Mother was very frightened. Some children did move away to stay with people in the country, but Mabel didn’t want to leave her Mother.
