Spies in Ewell?

In the summer of 1941, I was six . When it was dark my mother said to my father that there was something in our back garden. We lived in West Ewell Surrey and our house backed onto a playing field and wartime allotments. It was a very wet night. My father went to the back door and said he thought that there was someone in a ditch at the bottom of the garden.

It seemed that a torch shone as aircraft flew overhead. My father climbed out the front room window and called a neighbour who was on leave from the RAF. He also thought that someone was signalling. My father went back through the window and went to get the police.

A police sergeant came, climbed through the window and watched from upstairs.
He was sure that the torch light was signalling. He went for reinforcements.

Two people, a man and a woman were arrested. We later learned that they were in
the fire service and stationed at Clapham. It was very odd that they should have come down from Clapham and be in a ditch on such a very wet night.

Our garden was on the approach to the Kingston By-Pass where there were several factories doing war work.
