This is my dad sitting at the controls of a spitfire as far as far as I remember, on the apron at Eastleigh airport.
He wasn't a pilot but worked in the manufacture of the aircraft. How he managed to get into the cockpit is a puzzle. He subsequently went to work at Hursley Park and I went to the village school next door and during playtimes we were sent into the park to disperse so that if enemy aircraft flew overhead we were scattered about.
Also at the school we had a truck arrive where all the children walked through to test our gas masks.
