Was strongly defended, was not taken as planned on first day. Biggest concentration of guns ever, firing hour after hour.
Spitfire shot down by German fighter, crash-landed by our gun sight.
Pilot thought he was in German area, was about to fire his plane, we got to him first, very grateful, he was a New Zealander.
Within half an hour he was back up again on other Spit, came over gave victory roll.
After battle Caen was devastated. Had to wait for bulldozers to clear away rubble to get through town.
