============================================

I left school at age 16 in July, 1940, I did three months comptometer training, prior to going into an office. I worked in a new firm in Bessemer Road, Attercliffe for just four days. On the fifth day, Hitler visited the city during the night. The city centre was in ruins. I got a tram to Bessemer Road, and worked all day Friday.

Hitler came along again on the Saturday and this time, the firm was demolished. However, I was transferred to the company’s other location in Ecclesfield where I continued to work.
