The Germans used to drop mines that missed the sea. One fell a hundred yards away from me as I was out in the street. Luckily a dip in the ground protected me from the blast. It went off with a hell of a bang and blew the wall of our house off! It really would have destroyed me and the house completely if it hadn’t been for that dip.
Normally, if a raid went on until 4am we got a day off school, but after this one, my Mum sent me to school any way. I was the only one there!
I remember that I used to watch the dog fights in the air. We Scots made engines for spitfires; we thought that the 602 City of Glasgow Squadron were the best fighters!
Another time, I remember that the whisky distillery was hit and the whisky ran down the streets to the Clyde. It was all alight with pale blue flames.
Mr McCredie told his story to Jenni Waugh, ´óÏó´«Ã½ People’s War Outreach Officer, at the ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ Roadshow in Kidderminster Town Hall on 5 December 2004. He is aware of and accepts the site’s terms and conditions.
