Born 17 Moreton Street, Strangeways on 10 Jan 1928. Her first memories of war and evacuation with family to Kymnal Bay, Rhyll, Wales. School. Nervous reaction to war. Return to Manchester for a short time (5-7 mins). February 1940, departure for Chicago and New York where mother鈥檚 family lived. Went on journey to New York and then to Chicago. She stayed 1 year in Chicago. Mother worked and she to school. Surrounded by family.

Then, she had 1 year in Brooklyn. Uncle the Dean of photography in New York. She lived near sea. Her father was in Manchester. He lived at 143 Cheetham Hill. Returned to Manchester October 1942. Her mother was ill and died within 3 months, aged 47.

There were food shortages. Her mother had run a dress business selling on markets. She went to Lawburn College to learn typing.

How affected by war. Life would have been different. She went to live with sister in Prestwich and experienced the doodle bugs. Her memories are of being frightened and the blackouts. She helped sister look after the children and worked on the markets. They queued for food rations. They were not short of clothes because in clothes business.

They had a visit to London and the theatre. Brother stayed in New York and then Canada. He returned to Manchester 1947 but only stayed for 15 months before returning to Canada and then Los Angeles. Memories were of blackout, hardship with buses. Went to hear music for entertainment.

Her mother sang, worked and sent money to family in America. She has no memories of D Day or VE Day. She remembered rations. The death of mother affected more than end of the war.

Ship to America accompanied by destroyers. Journey there and back. Americans came back with them. She hates the Germans and Japanese. I remember Jewish refugees from Germany and black shirts. I was frightened it would happen again. They traded coupons. Fruit was rare. Rations included powdered eggs.

Message 1 - SS Carare

Posted on: 10 January 2006 by D Peter Smith

The Carare was an Elders & Fyffes banana boat that sank if Lynmouth on 28th May 1940 en route to Jamaica and Colombia. I was a passener on that voyage with my mother and two brothers. Three of us were in a lifeboat that tipped over when being lowered an dropped us in the sea. We were picked up by the HMS Rhodora that was standing by at the time. I have traced a certain amount of information about the sinking and would like to contact anyone else who knows anything about this event so that I can corroborate the data I have.
