I can remember on one occasion a barrage balloon broke loose and trailed its wire all over the town and knocked chimney pots off all over the place.

They tried to shoot it down, unsuccessfully at first. When at last they succeeded, the balloon itself was then useless, so they put it on a dump.

Of course in less than no time, the word had got around and suddenly everybody had little aluminium macs on!

Message 1 - BARRAGE BALLOON

Posted on: 16 November 2004 by TED DANN

Hi John,
your article reminded me of an incident in the Blitz on Peckham..
We were awoken in the night by a bit of a racket outside, there had been no Air Raid alert, and there was the sound of falling Bricks, and a strange grating noise, and on opening the front door, a voice boomed out
"KEEP IN" - "KEEP IN" Chimney Pots & slates were falling into the street. yes a balloon had broken free and it's cable was dragging across the roof tops, I don't know how it was retrieved, can't recall any shooting at the time, but I know it was quite frightening.
Since replying to you I note there are other stories about Rogue Barrage Balloons elsewhere on this web site, so it would seem quite a lot broke free.
Cheers! to you,
Ted Dann.
